‘Doctors will be fearful of taking any risk’

‘Doctors will be fearful of taking any risk’

Ahmedabad: Responding to a call for solidarity with Dr Kalpesh Nakum over 300 doctors gathered at Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) on Thursday night. The doctors decided not to be bogged down by the incident and fight for stringent adherence to the codes protecting doctors and approaching state authorities for ensuring safety. The gathering alleged that police’s slow response to the pleas of help benefited the perpetrators.
A group meeting and an office-bearers meeting took place back-to-back to decide future course of action including possibility of a strike.
“If it’s how doctors are going to be treated, they would be fearful of taking any risk. Outcome of a difficult medical procedure is always difficult to assess and every doctor tries to save the life of a patient. We know that the heinous attack is carried out by a minuscule portion of the population but it has huge ramifications for the fraternity,” said a doctor who was part of the meeting.
“We used to ridicule our colleagues from other states when they would roam around with firearms. But someone abducting a doctor in a city like Ahmedabad? It’s unheard of. Where’s the state’s safe tag?” asked another doctor.
